WHO: Over 14,000 displaced by fighting in Kharkiv

More than 14,000 people have been displaced in recent days from the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv, where Russia launched a ground offensive on May 10, the World Health Organization said.

During this offensive, Russian forces have made the biggest advance in Ukraine in at least 18 months.

"Over the past two weeks, fighting in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine has escalated severely," WHO representative in Ukraine Jarno Habicht told a media conference via video link.

"More than 14,000 people have been displaced within days and almost 189,000 are still inside the 25-kilometer perimeter on the border with the Russian Federation, facing great risks due to the ongoing fighting," he added.

Habicht said that the United Nations health agency provided these figures after discussions with local authorities.

"With the deterioration of the security situation, the humanitarian needs in the region are increasing", he emphasized.

The conflict in Kharkiv "has significantly increased the number of injured patients", he added.

Russia has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

According to the WHO, more than 20,000 amputations have been carried out since the start of the war. Habicht said that on average per year, 200 ambulances are damaged or destroyed by shelling "denying Ukrainians emergency health care"./ REL
