Houthi rebels, new attacks on ships

Yemeni rebels, the Houthis, have attacked three ships in the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Sea, said the spokesman for this Iran-backed group, Yahya Sarea.

For months, Houthi rebels have been attacking ships in recent months in a show of solidarity with the Palestinians, following the start of the war between Israel and Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - in Gaza.

Sarea said Houthi rebel forces have attacked the Yannis in the Red Sea, the Essex in the Mediterranean and the MSC Alexandra in the Arabian Sea.

Houthi rebels "launched several missiles at the Essex ship in the Middle, as it was violating the ban on entering Palestinian-occupied ports," Sarea said.

He did not say exactly where the attack took place.

Earlier this month, Yemeni rebel leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi said all ships bound for Israeli ports would be attacked by the group, not just those passing through the Red Sea, where the rebels had first carried out attacks.

Since November last year, Houthi rebels have attacked ships passing through the key Red Sea trade route, the Baba al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden with drones and missiles to show support for the Palestinians during the war in Gaza.

This has forced many shipping vessels to avoid these waters and carry goods through other routes around Africa, increasing the cost of transportation./ REL
