USA, $275 million in new aid to Ukraine

President Joe Biden's administration on Friday announced $275 million in new military aid to Ukraine as Kiev grapples with the advance of Russian forces in the Kharkiv region.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the new aid package, which was previewed Thursday by two US officials, "is part of our efforts to help Ukraine repel Russia's attack near Kharkiv."

"The aid provided earlier has already arrived at the front line and we will transport the new aid as quickly as possible so that the Ukrainian army can use it to defend their territory and to to protect the Ukrainian people," Secretary Blinken said in a statement.

"The United States and the international coalition we have established will continue to stand by Ukraine in defense of its freedom," he said.

The new aid package contains, among other things, HIMARS high-mobility missile systems, as well as 155 mm and 105 mm caliber shells, which are indispensable for artillery strikes. The package also contains Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems, anti-tank mines, tactical armored vehicles, light weapons and ammunition.

With the latest aid package, the United States has already given Ukraine military aid worth a total of about $51 billion since Russia launched its military offensive in February 2022./ VOA
