Powerful storms in Texas / At least 5 dead

Powerful storms that swept across Texas have left at least five people dead in rural areas, while many others have been injured.

In addition to Texas, storms also hit Oklahoma, where authorities said damage was done to homes and a highway. Thousands of people were left without electricity due to the storms on May 26.

Destructive storms began Saturday night, including a tornado that destroyed cars on a freeway near Dallas. Officials said several people were taken to a hospital in Denton, Texas, but did not provide further details on their condition.

In neighboring Cook County, police told The Associated Press that people died, including three members of a family, who were found in their home in a rural area near the Oklahoma border.

"We confirm that five people have died, but unfortunately the number of victims may increase. Nothing is left in their house. The destruction is great," said the police.

Meteorologists warned of tornadoes in different parts of both American states, while other parts of the US have also faced storms this month.
