Borrell: A strong Palestinian Authority, needed for peace in the Middle East

A "strong" Palestinian Authority is needed to bring peace to the Middle East. This is what the head of diplomacy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, said when he met the Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohammed Mustafa, on May 26.

"It is also in Israel's interest that the Palestinian Authority is functional because in order to achieve peace, we need a strong Palestinian Authority, not a weak one," said Borrell.

He made these statements before starting a meeting with the Palestinian prime minister, with whom he said he will discuss how the Palestinian Authority can be strengthened to take over the leadership of Gaza from Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union. .

"We see today's meeting as a very important opportunity for us as the Government, as a new executive to present to our international partners our priorities and plans for the future", said Mustafa.

The Palestinian prime minister said his first priority is to support the Palestinians in Gaza, particularly through a ceasefire and then "rebuilding the institutions of the Palestinian Authority" in Gaza.

Hamas took control of Gaza from the Palestinian Authority in 2007.

Mustafa also called on international partners to pressure Israel to unlock funding for the Palestinian Authority "so that we can be ready to reform our institutions... and hopefully work together towards statehood and peace in the region." ".

The meeting in Brussels is expected to focus on international aid for the Palestinians, as the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza continues for more than seven months./ REL
