American lawmaker, Taiwan: The guns are coming
Michael McCaul

The top US official, Michael McCaul, said on Monday that orders to Taiwan are on the way and that China's warlike games have increased the need to strengthen the island's defense capabilities.

China regards Taiwan - a self-governing island - as its own and has vowed to gain control of it by force if necessary.

Taiwan's government, on the other hand, rejects Beijing's claims to the island.

In the past two years, Taiwan has complained about delays in receiving American weapons, such as Stinger missiles, because American manufacturers are supplying weapons to Ukraine as it fights Russian aggression.

McCaul, the leader of the House Foreign Relations Committee, said China's military sent the United States a strong message last week.

"We are advancing the work regarding weapons systems. I would like to see faster work, but [weapons] are coming," McCaul told reporters in Taipei after meeting with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te.

He has said that Taiwan needs enough weapons so that Chinese President Xi Jinping understands that the risks of occupying the island outweigh the benefits.

"President Lai and I, as always, had a very direct conversation about the threat the island faces from its northern neighbor," McCaul said. Without a strong defense, Xi has very aggressive ambitions."

China sanctioned McCaul last year, after a visit he made to Taiwan to meet with senior officials there./ REL
