The United States and Europe have begun producing or procuring vaccines for H5N1 bird flu, which can protect farmers, veterinarians and laboratory workers.

US officials announced last week that they were preparing 4.8 million vaccines from Sequirus, while European officials said they were negotiating with the company to buy the vaccines, Reuters reports. 

Similar preparations were announced by Canada and Great Britain, due to the spread of a new type of bird flu that appeared at the end of 2020 and caused the death of a large number of wild birds and poultry.

Infections have also been recorded in a large number of mammals.

In March, US officials reported the first outbreak of the virus in dairy cattle, which has infected dozens of herds in nine states and two dairy workers.

The US Food and Drug Administration has estimated that 20% of the US milk supply shows signs of the virus, indicating that a wider spread is likely.

Human exposure to the virus in poultry and dairy operations may increase the risk that the virus will mutate and gain the ability to spread easily to humans. /CNA
