Zelensky signs security agreement with Belgium

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a security agreement with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo in Brussels on Tuesday.

Zelensky has said that the agreement worth 977 million dollars shows the commitment of Belgium to provide support to Ukraine in a period of 10 years.

According to the Ukrainian president, the agreement shows "for the first time" that Ukraine will receive 30 F-16 military aircraft, and the first will be delivered later this year.

This security agreement is the result of a decision taken by the heads of the NATO member states during a summit in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, in July last year.

Then, the member countries have agreed to sign bilateral agreements with Ukraine, to guarantee the security of this country in the long term.

The agreements guarantee that Ukraine will receive weapons and financial aid to fill the gaps until the country fulfills its goal of NATO membership.

The agreement comes as Russia continues to advance on the battlefield on Ukrainian soil.

The Ukrainian military has suffered from a shortage of weapons and ammunition in recent months, even as the United States approved $61 billion in military aid to the country.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions. As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes. /REL
