Head of PDK: There will be no dissolution of the Assembly of Kosovo
Chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Memli Krasniqi

The Chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Memli Krasniqi, said on Wednesday that the Assembly of Kosovo will not be dissolved, due to the lack of support from the other two opposition parties for this.

The opposition parties, PDK, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), have long been demanding that the country go to early elections, but did not reach agreement on how to do this.

"I inform you that the opportunity to dissolve the Assembly has been exhausted [exhausted]. PDK's call for the dissolution of the Assembly has not found support. I am surprised by the unwillingness of the opposition parties to do such a thing, because not going to the elections is extending the mandate of the current government", said Krasniqi on Wednesday at a press conference in Pristina.

The mandate of the Government of Kosovo, led by Albin Kurti, ends at the beginning of 2025.

Prime Minister Kurti expressed his willingness to hold early elections through the dissolution of the Assembly, saying that it would be good if new elections were held in the spring or fall of this year.

While the PDK supported the possibility of new elections through the dissolution of the Assembly, the LDK and the AAK opposed and demanded that the Kurti Government resign or be dismissed.

"The Democratic Party has always been ready for any option that enables early elections and the removal of this government. Even for us, resignation was the preferred way of going to the elections, but we all know that the only real option on the table was through the dissolution of the Assembly", said Krasniqi.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Glauk Konjufca, said that in recent days the "chances" for the dissolution of the Assembly have decreased.

Krasniqi had met Kurti at the beginning of May to discuss the possibility of early elections, but Lumir Abdixiku of LDK and Ramush Haradinaj of AAK refused.

Abdixhik and Haradinaj have argued that the Kurti Government should resign to take "responsibility for its failures".

Since Kosovo became an independent state in 2008, no elected government has completed its 4-year mandate.

The current government of Kurti may become the first to complete the full four-year mandate, after the lack of compliance for early elections./ REL
