Over 200,000 people received German citizenship in 2023

A total of 200,100 people obtained German citizenship in 2023, the highest number recorded since 2000.

Announcing that 157 different nationalities benefited from German citizenship, Germany's Federal Statistical Office said the 2023 figures represent a 19 percent increase from the 2022 statistics, SchengenNews reports.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, citizens of the following countries accounted for the largest number of citizenships granted in Germany last year:

-Syria (75,000)
-Turkey (10,700)
-Iraq (10,700)
-Romania (7600)
-Afghanistan (6500)

The office found that on average the group of newly naturalized German citizens was 29.3 years old and younger than the general population of Germany, which the government says is about 44.6 years old. At the same time, women accounted for nearly 45 percent.

In 2022, a total of 168,545 people living in Germany obtained citizenship in this country, thus representing only 3.1 percent of internationals living in Germany for at least ten years./ CNA
