Battles in Rafah intensify

Residents in Rafah, south of Gaza, reported intensifying artillery shelling and gunfire on May 30 after Israel said it had taken control of a strategic corridor on the Palestinian territory's border with Egypt.

The Israeli army launched its incursion into Rafah in early May, despite international opposition due to concerns over the fate of Palestinians taking refuge in this part of Gaza.

An attack over the weekend sparked a fire that killed dozens of people in a displaced persons camp, prompting strong international condemnation.

Israel, which has repeatedly vowed to destroy Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - after the group attacked southern Israel on October 7, said a day earlier that it had taken control of a strategic corridor in the Gaza-Egypt border, as he said he suspects that there are tunnels in that area that have been used to smuggle weapons.

In the Gaza Strip, witnesses reported fighting in central and western Rafah.

Witnesses also said that Israeli forces destroyed several buildings in the eastern part of Rafah. When Israel launched its incursion into the city on May 7, it initially focused on the crossing point with Egypt, which is a key entry point for humanitarian aid.

Fighting and artillery shelling were also reported in Gaza City, north of the enclave, as residents said they saw smoke coming from the refugee camps, Jabalia and Beit Lahia.

Before Israel launched its offensive in Rafah, the United Nations had estimated that 1.4 million people had taken refuge there. Since then, more than 1 million residents have fled the area.

The war, which began on October 7 after Hamas attacked southern Israel, has already killed thousands of people. Hamas killed 1,200 people and kidnapped 250 others during the unprecedented attack on Israeli soil. As a result of Israel's air, land and sea offensive, more than 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza so far, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. Israel claims to have killed 15,000 militants./ REL
