US President Joe Biden has given Ukraine permission to use US weapons to attack targets in Russia, but only near the Kharkiv region, two US officials told CNN. 

The decision was taken after Russia made significant advances around the city in the northeastern part of the country.

"The president recently instructed his team to ensure that Ukraine can use US weapons for the purpose of returning to Kharkiv so that Ukraine can retaliate against Russian forces that are attacking or are about to attack them." , said one of the officials.

The easing of restrictions marks a break with longstanding policy and comes amid growing international pressure from close US allies.

But that is limited to the area around Kharkiv, and Ukraine has not sought permission beyond that, the official said, adding that they do not expect the US to expand that area.

Kiev only asked Washington to change its policy in recent weeks as Russian forces advanced. 

Russian forces, ammunition depots and logistics centers can now be targeted by US-supplied artillery and missiles across the border from Kharkiv in western Russia./CNA
