Orban: NATO is getting closer to war every week
Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban

"NATO's plans to get more involved in the war in Ukraine are like firefighters trying to put out a fire with a flamethrower," Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on May 31.

Orban, who has close ties to Moscow, has been at odds with Western states over support for Ukraine since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbor more than two years ago.

NATO is "getting closer to war" every week, Orban said, as the alliance's foreign ministers meet in Prague to discuss military aid to Ukraine.

The head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said a day ago that "the time has come" for the members of the military alliance to reconsider some of the restrictions regarding the weapons they provide to Ukraine.

While Ukrainian leaders are calling on governments to ease restrictions, Western states appear divided over whether Ukraine should be allowed to attack targets on Russian soil.

Orban also said negotiations over sending French military trainers to Ukraine and allowing the Ukrainian military to use Western weapons to attack Russian targets were "worrying" ideas that would bring NATO closer to war.

A NATO mission in Ukraine would risk a world war instead of protecting alliance members, Orban said.

"It is absurd that NATO, instead of protecting us, is dragging us into a world war. This is as absurd as a fireman deciding to put out a fire with a flamethrower," Orban told Hungarian state radio.

Relations between Budapest and NATO have soured due to Hungary's delay in ratifying Sweden's admission to the alliance — Hungary eventually ratified Sweden's admission in March — and also because of Orbán's close relationship with Moscow despite the war. in Ukraine./ REL
