The Georgian Prime Minister wants to review the relations with the USA
Irakly Kobakhidze

Georgian Prime Minister Irakly Kobakhidze called on Friday for a review of relations between his country and the United States, after Washington took punitive measures against Tbilisi over the adoption of the "foreign agents" law.

"Georgia-US relations really need to be reviewed. We will discuss this with the ambassador", said Kobakhidze, according to the Russian news agency, "RIA Novosti".

The Georgian prime minister said relations with Washington were damaged during the previous ambassador's tenure because he had called for quick and visible political changes.

Georgia's parliament - controlled by the prime minister's Georgian Dream party - passed the law, which requires organizations that receive more than 20 percent of their funding from outside countries to register as agents of foreign influence.

This law has incited very large protests in the streets of Tbilisi.

Opponents of this law say it is authoritarian and is inspired by a similar law in Russia.

The European Union says this law jeopardizes Georgia's path to integration into the 27-member bloc.

This week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken imposed a visa regime and said that bilateral cooperation with Georgia will be reviewed.

He said that the law on "foreign agents" will "violate the right to freedom of expression" and that it will hinder the work of independent media organizations.

Kobakhidze's government says the law will promote transparency and safeguard sovereignty against what it says is an attempt in the West to bring Georgia into confrontation with Russia.

The Georgian President had used her veto against this law, but the Georgian Parliament overrode it. /REL
