China has announced that its unmanned mission has successfully landed on the far side of the Moon - an unexplored place almost no one tries to go to.

Chang'e 6 touched down at the South Pole-Aitken on Sunday morning, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said.

Launched on May 3, the mission aims to collect important rocks and materials from this region for the first time in history.

The probe could extract some of the moon's oldest rocks from a large crater at its South Pole.

The landing was fraught with danger because it is very difficult to communicate with the spacecraft once they reach the far side of the Moon. China is the only country to have achieved this feat before, landing Chang'e-4 in 2019.

Access to water would greatly increase the chances of successfully establishing a human base on the Moon for scientific research.

Beijing's broader strategy aims to get Chinese astronauts to the moon around 2030.

The US also aims to return astronauts to the moon, with NASA aiming to launch its Artemis 3 mission in 2026./ CNA
