Presidential elections in Mexico/ 99 million voters, a woman favorite for head of state

Almost 100 million voters will elect this Sunday the first president in the history of Mexico, the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world.

The favorite of the presidential elections is the candidate of the center-left coalition, Claudia Sheinbaum of the National Renaissance Movement (MORENA) party.

In the three months of the campaign, the former mayor of the capital (2018-2023) held an average lead of 17 points in the polls over her main rival, the center-right candidate Socil Gálvez, who is supported by a diverse three-party alliance oppositional.

The first voting centers open at 08:00 or 15:00 Albanian time. Some 99 million voters are registered in these elections, which will be the largest ever held in the history of Latin America's second-largest economy, after Brazil.

The authorities have announced that strict security measures will be implemented. A total of 27,000 military and National Guard personnel would be deployed. /CNA
