China accuses MI6 of recruiting Chinese state employees

China has accused the UK's Secret Intelligence Service MI6 of recruiting Chinese state employees as spies.

In a post on its official WeChat channel, China's Ministry of State Security said MI6 operatives turned a Chinese national identified as Wang and his wife surnamed Zhou against Beijing.

Both worked in key confidential departments in a Chinese state agency.

The ministry claimed that MI6 began recruiting Mr Wang when he went to the UK to study in 2015 under a Sino-British exchange programme.

Operators took "special care" of him in the UK, such as inviting him to dinners and tours to "better understand his interests and weaknesses", the ministry claimed.

The BBC has contacted UK authorities for a response.

This comes just over a month after the UK charged two men with spying for China. UK police have accused them of providing "articles, notes, documents or information" to a foreign country, while China has called the allegations "malicious defamation".

Earlier this month, a former marine accused of assisting Hong Kong's intelligence service was found dead, police said.

Beijing and some Western countries are increasingly making accusations of espionage.

In Mr Wang's case, Chinese authorities said MI6 operatives took advantage of Mr Wang's penchant for money, befriended him on campus under the guise of being students and forced him to provide "paid consulting services".

After a period of time, and under their estimation, he was asked to serve the British government in return for better remuneration and security offers, China's Ministry of State Security claimed.

Through Mr Wang, MI6 operatives also recruited Ms Zhou to spy for China, he added.

China's Ministry of State Security has posted frequent updates on its official channel since it was launched in August./ CNA
