Over 50 victims of extreme heat in India

More than 50 people died in India during the last three days, as a result of a heat wave that swept through several regions of this country.

At least 33 people died in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, authorities there said. Among the victims, according to them, there are also people who were engaged in the general elections, including officials and security guards.

In the state of Odisha, meanwhile, at least 20 people lost their lives. The federal Ministry of Health said it recorded at least 56 heat-related deaths from March 1 to May 30.

India, every five years, holds its general elections in April and May. But this year, the temperatures were record high - over 45 degrees Celsius, and in some areas even 50 degrees.

India's weather department said temperatures are likely to drop in the coming days, due to the onset of monsoon rains.

Some regions are also experiencing major shortages of water and electricity, due to increased consumption during the heat.
