An Iranian officer is killed in a suspected Israeli attack

An Iranian officer was killed by suspected Israeli airstrikes near the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Saeed Abyar, a member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was one of 17 people killed in the June 3 attack, the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency reported.

Neither the IRGC nor the Iranian government officially commented on the attack near Aleppo.

However, Iran's interim foreign minister, Ali Baqeri Kani, arrived in Syria on June 4, after staying in Lebanon the day before.

Abyar is the first IRGC officer to be killed in a suspected Israeli attack since April 1.

On that day, attacks on the Iranian Embassy compound in Damascus left seven members of the IRGC dead, including two generals.

Iran responded with an unprecedented missile and drone strike against Israel and threatened to retaliate against any further attacks targeting its interests in the region.

Tehran has a large military presence in Syria, where Israel periodically carries out attacks against Iranian-linked sites.

Raz Zimmt, a senior researcher at the Israel-based Institute for National Security Studies, told Radio Free Europe that Israel's target was likely to have been an ammunition depot and that Abyar and others were nearby.

But despite this, he said, Israel has shown that it is not deterred by Iran's threats of retaliation. /REL
