Slovenia is the latest European country to recognize the Palestinian state. The Slovenian parliament voted on Tuesday in support of the government's request to recognize the Palestinian state, following similar decisions by Spain, Ireland and Norway.

Slovenia's prime minister has said he has accelerated efforts to recognize the state of Palestine in response to Israel's expansion of operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The month-long offensive has cut off most trucks from entering Gaza with food aid, medicine and other items for Palestinians facing starvation.

In central Gaza, the Israeli army said on Tuesday that its troops, backed by airstrikes, had launched a ground operation in the Bureij refugee camp. Local hospital officials said an attack on the urban refugee camp killed 11 Palestinians, including three children and a woman.

The Israeli airstrikes and ground offensives across the Gaza Strip come as international mediators are waiting for Israel and Hamas to respond to a new proposal for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, according to Qatar, which has played a key role. in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas together with Egypt and the United States.

While announcing the proposal last week, US President Joe Biden said the three-phase plan had been put forward by the Israelis, but Israeli leaders have since distanced themselves from the proposal and vowed to continue the fight to destroy Hamas.

In Israel's operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, more than 36,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Ministry of Health, which does not distinguish between fighters and civilians in its figures.

Israel launched the war in the Gaza Strip after a Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7 that killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapped around 250 others. About 80 hostages kidnapped on October 7 are believed to be still alive in Gaza, while 43 others have died./ Voa
