Netanyahu: Israel, ready for strong action in the north

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that the Israeli army is prepared for strong action in northern Israel, adding that security will "definitely" be deployed in the area which is being attacked by Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group.

The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which has been running concurrently with the war in the Gaza Strip, has intensified in recent days, raising concerns that a wider conflict could erupt in the region.

"Anyone who thinks that they can harm us and that we will stand idly by is seriously mistaken. We are prepared for very strong actions in the north," Netanyahu said during a visit to this part of the country.

"We will definitely restore security in the north," he added.

The fighting between Hezbollah and Israel - described as the fiercest between them since the 2006 war - has forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes on both sides of the border.

Israeli strikes have killed about 300 Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon, as well as about 80 civilians, according to Reuters.

Attacks from Lebanon have killed 18 Israeli soldiers and 10 civilians, Israel says.

Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said on Tuesday that the army is on alert for an offensive on the northern border and that Israel is close to making a decision.

The US State Department said on Tuesday that Washington does not want to see full-scale war and is trying to find a diplomatic solution. He added that Israel has the right to defend itself from Hezbollah.

Hezbollah, designated a terrorist organization by Washington, announced on Wednesday several operations, including a missile attack against the Israeli anti-aircraft missile, Iron Dome, in Ramot Naftali, about three kilometers from the border.

Hezbollah is an ally of the Palestinian group Hamas - which is designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Hezbollah has said it is carrying out attacks in Israel in support of Palestinians facing Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip. In the past, the group has said it will stop attacks when the Israeli war in Gaza ends./ REL
