Tragic accident in the Czech Republic/ Trains collide, 4 victims and 23 injured

At least four people were killed and 23 others injured after a passenger train collided with a freight train in the Czech Republic, authorities said Thursday.

Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said the crash happened late Wednesday evening in the town of Pardubice - about 100 kilometers east of Prague.

The high-speed passenger train belonged to the private company RegioJet. Rakusan said none of the injured were life-threatening.

Transport Minister Martin Kupka said the main road between Prague and the eastern part of the country had to be closed while authorities investigated the crash.

"We cannot and will not speculate on the cause of the accident," Kupka said.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

State-owned train company Czech Railways said the tracks could remain closed for the day "due to the scale of the accident".

Rescuers said more than 300 passengers were on the high-speed train bound for the city of Kosice in eastern Slovakia.

The victims have not yet been identified. The drivers of both engines survived, the Czech News Agency said.

After the accident, seventeen people were admitted to the emergency department of the Pardubice hospital.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala called the accident a great tragedy and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
