Israeli attack on UN shelter in Gaza causes 27 casualties

An Israeli airstrike on a UN school packed with hundreds of displaced people in central Gaza has killed at least 27 people, local officials say.

The Israeli military said it carried out an attack on a UN school that housed a "Hamas compound".

Local journalists told the BBC that an Israeli warplane fired two rockets into classrooms on the top floor of the school in the Nuseirat refugee camp.

Hamas' media office has accused Israel of carrying out a "horrible massacre".

Ambulances and rescue teams have sent the injured and victims to a nearby hospital.

Ismail al-Thawabta, director of Hamas' media office, rejected Israeli claims that the UN school had hidden a Hamas command post.

At least 36,580 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war, according to the Hamas territory's Ministry of Health. /CNA
