President Joe Biden is today in Paris where he was received with ceremony on a state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The visit began with a welcome ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe and a military parade along the Champs-Elysees boulevard. Afterwards, the two presidents held a bilateral meeting that was followed by public statements.

In the evening, the French president hosts a state dinner at the Elysee Palace in honor of President Biden and his wife, first lady Jill Biden.

During ceremonies in Paris and earlier ones in Normandy to mark Allied Landing Day in Europe, the two allies aimed to show partnership on global security issues and put trade tensions behind them.

During his speech on the beaches of Normandy, where the Allies landed 80 years ago, President Joe Biden emphasized the need for transatlantic unity and called on Americans to renew their commitment to the defense of democracy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was also present in Normandy, who expressed gratitude for the support for his country during emotional meetings with American veterans. In such moments, it becomes even clearer for Europe that it must play its role. "There is no doubt a common feeling in Europe that we need to step up defense and security efforts. But of course European security and the future of Europe's security architecture cannot happen without the United States. So, whatever steps are taken, it will be with the American presence and some kind of coordination," says Leonie Allard, from the Atlantic Council.

The message delivered from across the ocean to Europe seems likely to resonate with a significant portion of Americans who believe in America's role.

"There are a large number of Americans who are veterans and who respect the military and believe that the United States has an important role to play, a special role to play in a world that protects democracy. And for these individuals, I think President Biden's message will be convincing," says Jeremi Suri, from the University of Texas at Austin.

But the messages delivered to the few American veterans still alive from World War II are complicated by continued support for Israel's continued war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip./ VOA
