Iran selects six candidates for the presidential elections

Iran has announced the names of six candidates - mostly conservative - for the June 28 presidential election.

Elections will be held to replace President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash.

The candidates presented by the Ministry of Justice were selected from 80 people who applied.

The selection was made by the Council of Guardians, a body that oversees elections in the Islamic Republic.

Among the candidates is the speaker of the Assembly, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and the former negotiator for nuclear issues, the ultraconservative, Saeed Jalili.

There is only one reformist candidate on the list, Massoud Pezeshkian, currently a member of Parliament.

The former Iranian interior minister, Mostafa Pourmohammadi, then the mayor of Tehran, Alireza Zakaani, and the current vice president, Amirhossein Ghazizadeh-Hashemi, are also on the list.

Former hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been disqualified from the race, the same as in 2017 and 2021.

Moderate figures such as: Ali Larijani and Vahid Haghanian have also been banned from running.

In the 2021 elections, the Council of Guardians disqualified many reformist and moderate figures, which then resulted in the victory of the ultra-conservative Rais.

The elections won by Raisi have been described with the lowest turnout ever in the Islamic Republic - only 48.8 percent./ VOA
