Head of EULEX: Banjska has proved the fragility of the north

The head of the mission of the European Union for the rule of law in Kosovo (EULEX), Giovanni Pietro Barbano, said on Sunday that the attack in Banjska t Zveçani proved the fragility and vulnerability of the north of Kosovo, and called for an end to the tensions and crises.

He made these statements in an interview for the KosovaPress news agency.

"Banjska has proven the fragility and vulnerability of this area. Therefore, this area requires special attention. We are vigilant to prevent any possible return of violence."

On September 24 last year, an armed group of Serbs attacked the Kosovo Police in Banjska, killing Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku.

Three attackers were also killed in the exchange of fire.

Kosovo considers Serbia responsible for organizing and carrying out the attack, but Belgrade denies everything.

The head of EULEX has called for Serbia to do everything possible to prevent the recurrence of any situation like the one in Banjska.

"We expect Serbia to exercise the power it has to hold accountable those who committed the attack."

The responsibility for the attack in Banjska was taken by the former vice-president of the Serbian List, Millan Radoicic.

Although an international arrest warrant has been issued against him, he is free in Serbia.

The head of EULEX has said that the mission he leads has increased the level of vigilance to prevent the recurrence of any crisis and knows that Kosovo has strengthened its presence and capacities along the border.

"If something happens again, then it would mean that, most likely, the institutions in Serbia have failed to prevent an attack."

The Kosovo Police is the first responsible for the security of Kosovo, EULEX the second, while the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, the third.

Barbano called for Kosovo and Serbia to engage in dialogue and resolve all issues through that channel.

Serbia does not recognize Kosovo's independence and is constantly engaged in lobbying campaigns against Kosovo.

The two countries have been in dialogue in Brussels, for the normalization of relations, since 2011.

The parties have signed many agreements, but not all of them have been implemented./ REL
