The preliminary results of the elections held in Bulgaria on Sunday put the conservative coalition GERB-SDS, led by former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, in the lead.

With 36.7 percent of the votes counted, GERB-SDS has 23.39 percent.

The second is the Movement for Rights and Freedom with 16.7 percent.

The latter has traditionally represented the Turkish and Muslim population in Bulgaria, but is now, for the first time, led by a Bulgarian, Delyan Peevski, who is under US and UK sanctions for corruption.

The reformist coalition We Continue Bulgaria's Democratic Change - GERB's partner in the outgoing coalition government - is third with 14.75 percent.

Borisov expressed doubts that any party or coalition will be able to form the new government.

He said that it does not seem likely that his party, GERB, will have enough votes to do this with any of its partners, nor the opposition with its allies.

Early elections in Bulgaria - the sixth in three years - were caused by the fall of a coalition government in March./ REL
