The President of Switzerland: The summit for Ukraine is not propaganda

Swiss President Viola Amherd said nearly 90 countries and organizations will participate in a summit for peace in Ukraine, to be held this weekend in Burgenstok, Switzerland.

Amherd said the summit participants - about half of whom will be heads of state or government - will try to find a way to stop the fighting.

Ukraine is under the full occupation of Russian forces as of February 2022.

"This is not propaganda," Amherd told reporters.

"This has to do with the basis of the humanitarian aid offered by Switzerland... and with the initiation of a dialogue," she said.

While French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are expected to attend the summit, officials from China and Russia are expected to be absent.

Moscow is not invited and says that the process is meaningless without its participation.

China's Foreign Ministry, on the other hand, said it will not participate in the summit because it does not meet its expectations for the participation of both Russia and Ukraine.

"China has always insisted that an international peace conference should be approved by both Russia and Ukraine, with equal participation of all parties, and that all peace proposals should be discussed fairly and equally." , said the ministry in Beijing.

As preparations for the summit continue, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his forces are "holding back Russia's advance" and "destroying its units that enter and terrorize the Kharkiv region."

Radio Free Europe was unable to independently verify the claims, but US national security adviser Jake Sullivan told CBS Television that while Kharkiv "remains under threat", the Russians "have not been able to make progress on the ground in the last days"./ REL
