"We demand a vote of confidence and new elections," Alice Weidel, leader of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), told reporters on Monday.

Germany's far right is celebrating after defeating German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's centre-left SPD, which came second in the European Parliament elections with 16%.

AfD's results are better than expected. Their election campaign was hit by a series of scandals, with allegations of money laundering, money from the Kremlin and spying for China.

In the end, the AfD had to campaign without its two main candidates, Maximilian Krah and Petr Bystron, who were under investigation for ties to Russia and China.

In eastern Germany, where the AfD is particularly extreme but often leads in the polls, the far right won the majority of the vote.

And the party managed to increase its share among young voters, who perhaps enjoyed rebelling against mainstream German acceptance norms.

Perhaps the AfD did well, not in spite of the scandals, but because of them. The ruling coalition is in turmoil, trying to figure out what went wrong.

On Monday, an SPD leader called the results a "painful humiliation".

The Conservatives are certainly happy with their headline result of 30%. But given how unpopular the government is, this is not a surprising result./ CNA
