The killing of Fernando Villavicencio overturned the last week of campaigning in Ecuador, the BBC reports.

All eight candidates spoke of the need for peace and security - and after an often bloody campaign, it was a message Ecuadorians desperately wanted to hear.

After Villavicencio's death, a local politician was killed in the northern province of Esmeralda, and many feared more to come.

Thankfully, Sunday's election went off without incident, but no candidate had enough support to avoid a runoff.

This brings even more uncertainty as the campaign ramps up again ahead of October.

Leftist candidate Luisa Gonzalez received 33% of the vote, promising generous social welfare programs.

Her victory did not come as a surprise, she was always first.

But the second place candidate was less expected. Young businessman Daniel Noboa won 24% of the vote after a good showing in the last debate.

As Ecuadorians cast their ballots on Sunday, security was at the top of the agenda. Experts agree that the brutal campaign has changed the views of many people here./ CNA
