"Putin is a murderer"/ Protest in Podgorica against the Russian

A protest against the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, was held on Sunday in the center of the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica, with the slogan "Putin is a killer".

Dozens of people gathered in Podgorica's central square holding banners demanding the release of Alexei Navalny, the jailed Russian opposition leader.

The August 20 protest was part of a campaign organized by Navalny's team around the world under the slogan "Putin is a killer."

The protests are being held to mark the third anniversary of Navalny's assassination attempt, for which he was evacuated from Russia to Germany to recover from poisoning with a Soviet-era nerve agent.

On August 17, the US sanctioned four Russians it says were involved in the poisoning of Navalny, and who are linked to Russia's Federal Security Service.

The Kremlin has denied involvement in the poisoning of Navalny, who was arrested after returning to Moscow from Germany in January 2021.

"Putin is killing. He is killing thousands of people - Ukrainians and his own citizens," Navalny's team said in a statement calling for protests.

Leonid Volkov, the former head of the election campaign of the Russian opposition, wrote on social networks that it is important to emphasize loudly that "Putin is a murderer", because, as he says, only a third of the citizens of Western Europe are willing to say this at protests, according to a study by Navalny's team.

Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to two prison terms, 11 years and 19 years, on charges of extremism and embezzlement.

He investigated corruption in the Russian authorities and described the accusations against him as politically motivated./ REL
