The death toll from recent floods in the Chinese capital has risen to 33, including five rescuers, while 18 others are missing, local authorities said. 

The heavy rain particularly hit mountainous areas west of Beijing, causing 59,000 houses to collapse, damage to 150,000 others and flooding of more than 15,000 hectares of farmland. 

"A large number of roads have been damaged, as well as more than 100 bridges," Beijing Vice Mayor Xia Linmao told a news conference on Wednesday.

Given the level of damage, it could take up to three years to fully restore all functions, Xia said. 

Other parts of China also experienced major flooding, partly due to the impact of Typhoon Doksuri over the weekend, with dozens of people dead and missing. 

A rescue operation is also underway at the Yan tourist resort in southwestern Sichuan province, where a large number of visitors were swept away by the current./ CNA
