Lawyers for former President Donald Trump on Tuesday asked the judge in his trial on charges of trying to sway the 2020 election to postpone a hearing that will help determine how evidence can be used and shared in this matter.
Trump's lawyers and US special counsel Jack Smith's team clashed in a joint court appearance for a hearing date before US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan to discuss the handling of evidence.
Prosecutors said they were available throughout the week. Trump's lawyers asked for an adjournment until early next week, Reuters reports.
On Monday, Trump's defense team objected to a request by prosecutors for Chutkan to place a protective order to ensure that confidential evidence is not shared publicly by Trump, suggesting he could use the information to intimidate witnesses.
Trump's lawyers said the restrictions would infringe on his right to free speech, protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
Typically, defense attorneys do not object to such protective orders because doing so could delay the government from producing evidence it intends to use at trial./ CNA
