Zelensky: We will fight Russian attacks in the Black Sea
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Ukraine would fight back against Russian aggression in the Black Sea so it can import and export grain and other goods through its waters.

His remarks, published on the website of the Ukrainian presidency, come days after Ukrainian naval drones, packed with explosives, damaged a Russian warship near a Russian port and also hit a Russian oil tanker.

"If Russia continues to dominate the Black Sea, outside its territory, blocking [goods and travelers], or shooting at us again, hitting our ports with missiles, Ukraine will do the same. This is a fair defense of our opportunities, of any corridor," said Zelensky.

He called on Russia to stop attacking Ukrainian ports with drones and missiles, and to allow the development of trade in the Black Sea. He made these comments during a conference with journalists from Latin American countries.

It is not clear when this conference took place in his office in Kiev.

Tensions in and around the Black Sea have escalated since last month, when Russia pulled out of an agreement that allowed for the safe export of grain from Ukrainian ports. Russia has repeatedly hit Ukrainian ports and grain silos with drones and missiles.

"We don't have many ships. But they should clearly understand that by the end of the war, they will have zero ships, zero," said Zelensky.

Ukraine has responded with drone attacks from the sea on a Russian oil tanker and a Russian warship at its naval base, Novorossiysk, near a major grain and oil port.

Russia blockaded Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea at the start of its invasion in February 2022.

This blockade is suffocating Ukraine economically, as its pre-war economy was almost entirely dependent on exports, with steel and grains being the most exported./ REL
