Foreign exchange scheme busted in Berat/ 11 people under investigation, millions

The Berat Prosecution Office has finalized a 6-month proactive investigation, requesting security measures for 11 people, who are accused of "Practising financial activities without a license".

Within the framework of this proceeding, the prosecution has requested the security measure "House arrest" for 5 of the suspects, while for 6 other people the measure "Compulsion to report to the judicial police" has been requested.

Investigations revealed that six commercial entities in Berat and Kuçovë, licensed only for money transfers, had exceeded the scope of their activity, secretly conducting foreign exchange without the authorization of the Bank of Albania.

To prove this illegal activity, the prosecution authorized 28 simulated actions, where it was proven that the subjects were carrying out foreign exchange in violation of the law. During the inspections in these businesses, considerable amounts were found and seized, 88 million lek, 118 thousand euros, 7390 dollars and 665 pounds. The file has already been passed to the court for the assessment of the requested measures./ CNA
