Ukraine continues the counteroffensive in the southeast

The Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russian forces continued in the southeast of the country, Kiev said on August 8, as the death toll from a Russian rocket attack on the city of Pokrovsk a day earlier rose to seven killed and almost 70 wounded.

Ukrainian troops have continued to carry out attacks on the Russian occupation army in the direction of Berdyansk and Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia province, the General Staff of the Ukrainian army said.

The army statement said that Ukrainian forces had carried out nine airstrikes a day earlier, targeting areas where the Russian army "has concentrated personnel, weapons and military equipment".

Ukrainian troops have largely been on the defensive since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022. However, Kiev launched its counteroffensive this summer.

Russian forces have carried out seven missile strikes and 42 airstrikes over the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian military's General Staff said.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's Interior Ministry said the death toll from the Aug. 7 Russian missile attack on the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region has risen to at least seven and 67 injured, as search and rescue efforts resumed Tuesday morning. .

According to the ministry, among the injured are 29 police officials, two rescue workers and two children.
A photo posted by the ministry on social media showed a block of flats badly damaged, with the top floor completely destroyed.

Regional officials said two rockets hit Pokrovski on August 7, causing damage to residential and administrative buildings, a hotel and several shops./ REL
