Brazil hosts Amazon summit / What you need to know

The leaders of the eight Amazon rainforest countries are meeting this week in Brazil to address the urgent challenges facing the ecosystem, aljazeera writes . 

Representatives from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela will join the two-day meeting of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), which begins on Tuesday in the northern Brazilian city of Belem. .

The summit comes just months after Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office, pledging to reduce Amazon deforestation to zero by 2030 after years of destruction and largely unchecked development under his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula said last week that the meeting will require the drafting of a common policy for the first time for the protection of tropical forests./CNA.al
