The Eritrean festival was canceled after violent clashes

An Eritrean cultural festival held in Toronto, Canada has been canceled by city officials after violent protests broke out between participants and opponents of the Eritrean government.

According to local reports, protesters say proceeds from the annual three-day festival are used to support the Eritrean government, which has been described by human rights groups as one of the most repressive regimes in the world.

Divisions within Eritrea over the rule of President Isaias Afëerki have spread to the diaspora.

In recent weeks, protesters have disrupted similar festivals in Germany and Sweden.

In a statement, the Eritrean Canadian Community Center (ECCC) of Metropolitan Toronto, describing itself as a "non-political, charitable organization," said that while it was not affiliated with the festival, it was "deeply troubled" by the turn of events. ./ CNA
