Portugal: Evacuations due to forest fires

Portugal's forests have been engulfed by numerous fires, and fire brigades, civil defense and other helpers are continuing their efforts to extinguish them.

The biggest fires have involved Odemira in the southwest of the country, Leiria in the center and Cinfães and Mangualde in the north.

In Odemira alone, around 900 forces are currently fighting the flames.

Because of the fire, more than 1,400 people from 20 towns and a campsite had to be evacuated to safe areas.

So far, about 7,000 hectares of forest area have been destroyed by the flames, that is, an area equal to about 10,000 football fields.

According to official information, 38 new fires broke out throughout the country on Tuesday, but they were initially smaller in size.

In addition to them, 15 larger fires continue to be active. However, they are relatively under control, the Portuguese authorities announced.

High temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius and in some cases strong winds have made the work of firefighters and six firefighting planes significantly more difficult.

The meteorological service IPMA warns of a higher risk of forest fires in more than half of Portugal's territory, especially in the north and center of the country, including the capital Lisbon. The risk is expected to decrease significantly only from the weekend. Another risk factor is prolonged drought./DW
