Ancient lizard-like species discovered in Australia

Scientists have identified a new species of amphibian that invaded Australia about 247 million years ago, writes the BBC.

The discovery ends a mystery that has baffled researchers since the 1990s, when the creature's fossilized remains were found by a retired farmer in New South Wales.

Fewer than 10 fossils of lizard-like species have been identified globally.

Experts say the discovery could "rewrite the evolution of amphibians in Australia".

Scientists say the carnivorous amphibian once lived in Sydney's freshwater lakes and streams. This particular species belongs to the Temnospondyli family: resilient amphibians that survived two of Earth's five mass extinction events, including a series of volcanic eruptions that wiped out 70-80% of all dinosaurs approximately 250 million years ago. /CNA
