CNN: US plans permanent CIA presence in Venezuela after Maduro's ouster

According to a CNN report, the United States is working to establish a permanent Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) presence in Venezuela, shortly after the removal of former President Nicolás Maduro from power.

The report says that the US State Department will establish a visible long-term diplomatic role in Venezuela, but in the initial phase the US government is expected to rely heavily on CIA agents and structures, due to the evolving political process and the uncertain security situation in the country.

What does the plan include:

Building a CIA presence on the ground, sources say the agency is preparing a permanent office/division that will serve as a focal point for intelligence and operations in Venezuela.

Before an official US embassy is rebuilt in Caracas, US officials will use this CIA facility to build informal contacts with new government figures, opposition leaders and other key groups.

The agency will aim to "build links with Venezuelan intelligence services" and create networks of cooperation that ordinary diplomats cannot immediately develop.

The reports come as CIA Director John Ratcliffe was one of the highest-ranking US officials to travel to Venezuela shortly after Maduro's ouster and meet with the country's transition leaders. /CNA
