Sweden proposes imprisonment from the age of 13 for serious crimes

The Swedish government has announced that it will present a bill that would lower the age of criminal responsibility for minors from 15 to 13 years old for serious crimes, opening the possibility that in certain cases they could be punished with imprisonment.

The Minister of Justice, Gunar Stemer, has clarified that this is not a general lowering of the age of criminal responsibility for everyone, but only for the most serious cases, such as murders, attempted murders, bomb attacks with aggravating circumstances, gun crimes or rapes, always with aggravating circumstances.

This proposal comes at a time when Sweden has faced a rise in violence related to organized crime, including the recruitment of minors under the age of 15 for gun and bomb attacks, as until now they do not face prison sentences if caught.

The draft law was sent for public consultation to 126 authorities and organizations, but has received numerous criticisms.

Many institutions, including the police, correctional services, and prosecutors, are against it, arguing that lowering the age could involve very young children in the criminal system and that the correctional system is not prepared to accept such young minors.

The government claims that the measures are necessary to seriously address the rise in violence and organized crime, although public discussion on the issue is fierce and with strong opposition.
