Brazil will take over Mexico's diplomatic interests in Peru, the Brazilian government announced on Sunday, months after Peru severed relations with the North American country over its granting of asylum to a former prime minister.
In early November, official Lima severed relations with the Mexican government after former Peruvian Prime Minister Betsy Chavez was accepted as a refugee at the Mexican embassy in the Peruvian capital.
Chavez, who was prime minister under ousted former president Pedro Castillo and is now behind bars, faces conspiracy charges related to the 2022 attempt to dissolve Congress, charges she denies.
Brazil's Foreign Ministry said it is taking over the representation at the request of the Mexican government and with the approval of Peru, including maintaining the embassy headquarters in Lima, the residence of the head of mission, its properties and archives. /CNA
