A pack of wolves forces the closure of an Italian airport

The 'Rimini Fellini' Regional Airport in northern Italy suspended all flights, not because of bad weather, but because a pack of four wolves appeared near the runway, compromising the safety of the area.

Only one flight was affected, as airport activity is lower in winter. However, the main question remains why the wolves were there in the first place.

According to wildlife expert Pier Claudio Arrigoni, the wolves, present in the area for two years, may have been attracted to the airport by the rabbits, after the snow had driven them away from their traditional hunting grounds.

In recent weeks, residents of Romagna cities, including Rimini, Cesena and Pesaro, have recorded many sightings of wolves in urban areas, passing near homes or residential areas.

Residents of Rimini have created an emergency committee for wolves and are seeking stronger solutions as they see a surge in the wolf population, which now numbers around 3,000–3,500 across Italy, a strong recovery compared to the 1970s when they were close to extinction. /CNA
