NATO is preparing to strengthen its defenses on the European border with Russia over the next two years, primarily by creating an "automated zone" of defense.
This area will have equipment that will not require soldiers, a senior German officer told the foreign press today.
"The defense plan in question will include a defensive zone that the enemy will have to cross to advance, a kind of hot zone," Brigadier General Thomas Lovin, deputy chief of staff of NATO Land Command in Izmir, told the Sunday newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
Specifically, the sensors will detect enemy forces and activate defense systems, such as armed drones, partially autonomous combat vehicles, unmanned ground robots, as well as automated air and missile defense mechanisms, the brigadier general explained.
The first elements are already being tested in pilot projects in Poland and Romania.
The entire NATO mechanism will be put into operation, if possible, by the end of 2027./ CNA
