Bad weather causes around 1 billion euros in damage in Sicily

The new assessment of the damage from the strong wave of bad weather that hit Sicily until last night reaches 720 million euros. This was stated by the regional governor of the island, Renato Schifani.

As he stated, the declaration of a state of emergency in Sicily due to natural disasters ensures the immediate distribution of 70 million euros, which are intended to cover the most immediate needs resulting from the bad weather.

In Sardinia, the region's president, Alessandra Tode, said the damage was estimated at hundreds of millions of euros. At the same time, she called for immediate meetings with the government in Rome, with the aim of securing the necessary financial support.

The very high waves and continuous rainfall also caused, according to local authorities, serious damage to the island's archaeological heritage.

The situation was particularly worrying in Calabria. According to estimates, the coasts of the region, which are washed by the Ionian Sea, were covered by waves up to nine meters high. 

"This is a height equivalent to a four-story apartment building ," said the head of Calabria's Civil Protection, Fabio Ciciliano.

He added that the wave of bad weather was accompanied by winds exceeding 110 kilometers per hour, exacerbating the destruction in coastal areas and infrastructure. /CNA
