Shooting in Australia/ Three people dead, perpetrator on the run

Three people have been shot dead and a gunman is on the run after a shooting in a rural town in central western NSW.

NSW Police said on Thursday a police operation was underway at Lake Cargelligo, 240km southwest of Dubbo. Emergency services were called to the area at around 4.40pm following reports of gunshots.

Police confirmed that two women and a man had died, while another man was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. Police have urged residents to stay indoors. Between 1,300 and 1,500 people live on Lake Cargelligo.

"The public is urged to avoid the area and local residents are asked to stay indoors," police said.

Police have sent residents a geo-targeted text message, telling them to stay indoors and avoid the area.

The incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.

A staff member at the Commercial Hotel in the city center, who did not want to be identified, said there had been a lot of police activity.

"It's a terrible situation and it's still active, so we don't have a lot of information. My thoughts are with the victims and their families," Roy Butler, the NSW MP./ CNA, translated by The Guardian
