ICE arrests five-year-old and his father in Minnesota

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials arrested a five-year-old boy from Minnesota on Tuesday as he was walking home from school and sent him and his father to a detention center in Texas, according to school officials.

Liam Ramos, a preschooler, and his father were taken into custody while they were in their yard, the superintendent of the Columbia Heights school district, a suburb of Minneapolis, said at a news conference Wednesday. Liam, who recently turned five, is one of four children in the school district who have been detained by federal immigration agents during the Trump administration’s increased enforcement of the law in the region over the past two weeks, the district said.

Liam and his father had just arrived home when they were stopped, according to Zena Stenvik, the supervisor.

An agent had taken Liam out of the car, taken the boy to the front door of the house and instructed him to knock on the door demanding to be let in, "to see if anyone else was in the house - essentially using a five-year-old as bait," the supervisor said in a statement.

Stenvik said another adult living in the home was out during the detention and had asked to look after Liam so the boy could avoid detention, but was refused.

Marc Prokosch, an attorney representing the family, said the family has an active asylum case and possesses documents showing that the father and son had arrived in the U.S. at a port of entry, meaning an official crossing point.

"The family did everything they had to do in accordance with the rules set out. They did not come here illegally. They are not criminals," the lawyer said. He said there was no deportation order against them./ CNA, translated by The Guardian
