European Parliament votes on new rules for passengers when flights are delayed,

The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to reject efforts by EU member states to weaken air passenger compensation rights, while maintaining the three-hour delay threshold that has protected travelers since 2004.

MEPs approved their position by 632 votes to 15, with nine abstentions, rejecting Council proposals that would have reduced compensation rights and increased the delay threshold to four to six hours depending on the distance of the flight.

Parliament wants to keep compensation levels between €300 and €600 based on the distance of the flight, while the Council proposed lowering the maximum to €500. The vote also supported maintaining passengers' rights to reimbursement, rerouting and compensation for cancellations and denied boarding.

The draft rules would require airlines to send pre-filled compensation forms to passengers within 48 hours of cancellations or delays, giving travelers a year to file claims. The Council's position would require pre-filled forms only after cancellations, not delays.

MEPs also want to abolish additional fees for correcting errors in passenger names or checking in for flights, and guarantee free cabin baggage, including one personal item and one small hand luggage with maximum dimensions of 100 cm and seven kilograms.

Parliament supported maintaining the obligation for airlines to offer refreshments every two hours after departure, meals after three hours and overnight accommodation for a maximum of three nights during long delays. The three-night limit would offer airlines greater cost predictability, according to MEPs. /CNA
