EU suspends approval of trade deal with US

The European Union's legislative body on Wednesday halted work on the formal approval and implementation of the trade deal it reached last summer with President Donald Trump.

"Given the ongoing and growing threats, including tariff threats, against Greenland and Denmark, as well as their European allies, we are left with no alternative but to suspend work on the agreement," said Bernd Lange, chairman of the European Parliament's international trade committee.

"Until the US decides to recommit to a path of cooperation rather than confrontation," no steps will be taken to advance the agreement, Lange said in a statement.

"Our sovereignty and territorial integrity are at risk. Business as usual is impossible," he added in a post on X.

The announcement came after Trump said on Saturday he would hit seven European Union countries, plus the United Kingdom, with tariffs if they do not allow the United States to control Greenland.

The trade deal with the EU was reached in July during a visit by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Trump's golf club in Turnberry, Scotland.

The core of the deal was a cap on U.S. tariffs on most EU imports to just 15 percent. The rate was among the lowest agreed by any trading partner last year./CNA, translated by NBC News
